New Zealand is known for the Lord of the Rings, “All Blacks” national rugby team and the Air New Zealand safety video produced by the Sports Illustrated swimsuit models.
However, there are four other “dimes” that belong on the list.
In New Zealand, Tara Iti Golf Club, Cape Kidnappers, Jack’s point and Kauri Cliffs are the most drop dead gorgeous golf courses in the world.
All of the below courses have what I consider 6 star accommodations and you can’t go wrong spending a few days and playing 36 holes.
Tara Iti Golf Club – North Island
If you’re lucky enough to get a tee time at Tara Iti, keep the logo ball you buy in the clubhouse. Designed by innovative architect Tom Doak, noted for this amazing work at Bandon Dunes and Streamsong, this golf oasis should be on everyone’s must play list. This gem sits oceanside with loads of rolling dunes and a strategic layout of each hole. The course also has phenomenal luxury accommodations if you’re looking to stay the weekend.
Cape Kidnappers – North Island
To be the most visually appealing course on this list is an outstanding accomplishment. Most people see a picture of Cape Kidnappers and immediately say “where is that and when can I go there?”. Hugging the cliffs of Hawkes Bay, this golf course is absolutely breathtaking. You may have a difficult time keeping concentration on your game as this round of golf is a spectacular experience, where you’ll use your camera as much as your clubs.
Jack’s Point – South Island
No, it wasn’t designed by that Jack (Nicklaus) Designed by John Darby, the layout of Jack’s Point sits on the hills overlooking parts of Lake Wakatipu. In peak season, the plush green fairways and tussock grasslands resemble what may be our best representation of a modern day “Garden of Eden”. There are loads of trails for avid hikers on property as well as plush accommodations.
Kauri Cliffs – North Island
Kauri Cliffs is a stunningly attractive course overlooking the Pacific Ocean but it goes far beyond looks. Fifteen holes have a view of the ocean, but it’s the inland holes through the marsh, forest and farmland that give it charm. The overall design of this golf course by David Harman, is why it’s always on my must play list.
Traveling to New Zealand and playing golf will cost you a pretty penny but it is well worth the experience. Hopefully I will see you teeing it up in paradise soon.
