History and Design at the Hungaroring
Interestingly, the Hungarian Grand Prix was the first Formula 1 racing event held behind the Iron Curtain during the cold war. Originally they wanted to create a street circuit similar to Monaco but ended up deciding on building a racetrack at Mogyoród, Hungary in 1986.
Located just a few miles from Budapest, the Hungaroring is nicknamed “Monaco without the buildings”, due to its twisty and bumpy nature making it extremely difficult to overtake. Similar to other great sporting venues, the difficulty often creates epic duels among the greatest drivers. Ayrton Senna, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have all staged incredible victories at the Hungaroring.
Why should you travel to Hungary?
Budapest is one of the great cultural capitals of the world and is located only a few miles from the Hungaroring. It’s also important to note that the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix is a highly anticipated event each year in Hungary.
