F1 Travel Review Red Bull Ring, Austria

What do you picture when you think of Austria? Alpine yodeler’s…yodeling in the mountains? Delicious beer and brats? The famed cultured city of Vienna?

In Formula 1, Austria is known for one thing, the Red Bull Ring. It’s arguably one of the most popular venues in all of motorsport and home to the top tier F1 team, Red Bull.

Located in Spielberg, Styria, Austria, the original Österreichring (Austria Ring), now known as the Red Bull Ring, hosts the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix.

Quick Facts – Red Bull Ring

  • First Grand Prix – 1970
  • Circuit Length – 4.318 km (2.683 miles)
  • Location – Spielberg, Styria, Austria

History & Design at Red Bull Ring

History at the Red Bull Ring is pretty straight forward. In fact, the circuit was born due to the fact the original Zeltweg Airfield Circuit was just too bumpy host a race. Austrians wanted to create a track similar to Silverstone in Great Britain but it just didn’t work. They built the original Österreichring (Austria Ring) in 1969, however there have been many renovations to the track since then, including the adoption of Red Bull as the owner.

The modern Red Bull Ring was built/renovated in 1996 by Hermann Tilke. It’s design is short and sweet. On the first half of the track drivers gain speed and the last half they traverse the ups and downs of the terrain while at the same time handling some sharp corners. This venue requires speed, team strategy and balls fit for a bull (no pun intended).

Why Should You Travel to Austria?

What’s not to like? Austria is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The setting at the Red Bull Ring in Styria incredibly picturesque, surrounded by mountains and large pine trees. You’ll also find Austrians are very friendly and hospitable people, making your visit even more enjoyable.

Grandstands & Hospitality

There’s really not a bad seat in the house as the landscape at the Red Bull Ring is incredibly stunning. However, one of the best views in all of Formula 1 is known to be at the “Nord” grandstand. It will give you the perfect angle to watch race cars on the natural slope of the track.
