History & Design at Gilles Villeneuve
Built in 1978, the circuit was originally named IIe Notre-Dame Circuit as the track is located on the Notre Dame Island, a man made island in the St. Lawrence river outside Montreal. The Island was built for the 1967 International and Universal expo. Some of the exhibits are still scattered around the grounds including the Biosphere.
The race course is a masterpiece and has always been known as a power track, built for super high speeds. However, after the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger the circuit was redesigned for safety. The Senna ‘S’ turns, Droit du Casino Corner, hairpin curve and Wall of Champions are all legendary sections of the circuit. This venue guarantee’s exciting racing action year in and year out.
